Love Your Gut!
12 simple things you can do right away.
Here's a summary of the 12 tips I shared in my presentation along with the resources I mentioned. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like additional information.
Start at the beginning.
1. Prepare for digestion.
Give your brain a chance to signal your body to prepare for digestion.
Smell your food before eating.
Look at your food - take note of the colors, textures, shapes on your plate.
Chew chew chew your food - eat your liquids and drink your solids.
Slow down - put down your fork between bites.
Take things out.
2. Buy Non-GMO and 100% Organic.
Look for the Non-GMO and 100% Organic labels and opt for these products whenever possible.
Some foods are more important to buy organic than others. The non-profit Environmental Work Group produces helpful lists of the most and least pesticided foods in the US- THE DIRTY DOZEN and the CLEAN FIFTEEN.
3. Try an elimination diet.
Try an elimination diet. Remove gluten or dairy (or another allergen) from your diet for one month to see how this affects your health and how you feel. Do one or the other, not both at the same time. There are many resources online for gluten-free and dairy-free eating.
Make sure your meals and snacks are low-glycemic. CLICK HERE to download the guide to simply calculate if any food is low glycemic.
4. Remove sugar from your bloodstream.
Use a tongue scraper first thing in the morning, before you eat or drink anything, and again before bedtime. Your body releases toxins through your tongue, so you want to get rid of these rather than wash them back into your body when you eat or drink.
Tongue scrapers are available at drug stores and cost a few dollars. You can find fancy ones online, but the basics are just fine for this.
5. Use a tongue scraper.
There are many unsuspecting ways toxins make their way into our homes and so many simple things we can do to detoxify. The author of Healthy Home, Dr. Myron Wentz, created an online quiz that takes you room by room to see how healthy your home is.
6. Identify hidden toxins at home.
Add things in.
7. Balance your digestive enzymes.
If you feel bloated after you eat or still feel full or bloated hours later, that's a sign of an imbalance. Here are some ways you can enhance digestive enzyme production:
Have a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice or apple cider vinegar with warm water 20-30 minutes before you eat, especially large or heavy meals.
Add foods with naturally occurring digestive enzymes like ginger, papaya, pineapple, mango, honey, artichoke, and bitter herbs.
Take a digestive supplement with each meal, especially large or heavy meals. I recommend USANA Health Sciences Digestive Enzyme because it has all the enzymes you need to break down carbs, fats and proteins, and includes artichoke extract, which helps eliminate that bloaty feeling (see product details below).
8. Drink more water, eat more fiber.
You need half your body weight in ounces of water daily. That might seem like a lot, but try your best to reach that goal. Even if it's not every day, as much as possible is vital.
Adults need about 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories consumed. Get fiber from multiple sources and get as much from your food as you can.
Taking a fiber supplement is a good idea, but be sure to avoid the ones with added sugar.
I recommend USANA Fibery Plus because it has 2 kinds of fiber - psyllium and inulin. Psyllium is a bulking agent, the most common ingredient in fiber products. Inulin is a pre-biotic, which feeds the good bacteria that already live in your gut (see product details below).
9. Get more good bacteria into your gut.
Eat foods that contain probiotics. Here are some that are super healthy:
Yogurt (avoid highly flavored and sugared ones)
Kimchi
Kombucha
Miso
Saurkraut
Kefir and traditional buttermilk
Sourdough bread
Fermented pickles (not vinegar)
Tempeh
Some types of aged cheeses
Probiotics in food often don't make it into the small intestine, so taking a probiotic supplement gives you added support.
I recommend USANA Probiotic because it contains the 2 strains that research shows can make it through stomach and into the intestine. Plus, it does not need to be refrigerated and comes in a powder packet so it's easy to take along wherever you go (see product details below).
10. Replenish nutrition, repair cell damage.
Create nutrient-dense food opportunities with smoothies and salads that are low-glycemic. CLICK HERE download a guide to help you include good fats, good proteins, good carbs and fiber in your smoothies and salads.
Supplement your nutrition - No matter how lean, clean and green you eat, it's not possible anymore to get all of what you need from eating food alone. If you take a multivitamin, make sure it gets a high rating in the NutriSearch Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements - You can find this in book stores and I'll be glad to look up your brand.
I recommend USANA Cellsentials. There are other reputable supplement brands that nourish and protect, but USANA is the only one that also uses cell technology to renew cells (see product details below).

Get in the right position.
11. Do the wind removing pose.
Do the yoga wind removing pose before you get out of bed in the morning to help activate your gut.
CLICK HERE for a video demonstration. Don't worry about perfection since you are not in a yoga class, you're in bed trying to wake up. Work toward the intention of the pose to wake up your gut. If you're not as limber as the woman in the video, use a belt around your foot to help you get started.
Be sure to compress your right leg first to activate the ascending colon; then the left side for your descending colon; and then both legs for your transverse colon.
12. Get a squatty potty.
Consider getting a squatty potty to help get you in the best position for productive elimination. There are lots of styles, so shop around before you buy.
Get support.
Products I recommend.
These are the products I recommended in the presentation. The easiest improvement you can make to your health is taking high quality nutritional supplements. The vast majority of what’s on the market is subpar and even hazardous. I’ve done a ton of research to find a superior product that I’ve used since 2006 and eventually became a distributor. Click on each product to learn more or visit my company page to learn about all USANA Health Sciences nutrition products.
USANA CellSentials multivitamin for adults supplies carefully balanced levels of high-quality vitamins and antioxidants and a balanced range of highly absorbable essential minerals and trace minerals, plus powerful antioxidant protection and mitochondrial renewal support for the health and longevity of your cells.
